Disposal leaking, jammed or sink full of water
A disposal that leaks into the cabinet or clogs with a sink full of dirty water is a mess that grows. We answer the 24/7 line at night and on weekends, and same-day appointments are offered when available.
Do these things while you wait.
- Turn off the disposal switch and, if you can reach it, flip the breaker that powers it.
- Never put your hand into the disposal. The blades are hidden and the motor can restart. Use tongs only with the power off.
- If water is leaking, shut the sink's supply valves and put a bucket under the drip.
- Do not run the dishwasher, which drains into the same line.
- Bail standing water from the sink and clear the cabinet of items that can get wet.
- Photograph the leak and the damage, then call.
What a disposal repair is and when to replace
A garbage disposal is a small grinder mounted under the sink drain. Garbage disposal repair means fixing a jam, a motor, a seal or a drain connection so it works again. Replacement is the better path when the housing leaks or the motor has burned out.
Disposals do not last forever. A unit that leaks from its body cannot be sealed and must be replaced. A jam or a dead reset is often fixable. We look at the unit's age, the problem and what a new one costs before recommending a path. Some cities waive permits for like-for-like disposal swaps and others do not, according to each city's own permit page, so ask your building department before replacing a unit.
Symptom, cause and fix
Most calls match one of these patterns.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Hums but does not spin. | Jammed flywheel from food or a foreign object. | Turn off power, crank the flywheel from underneath with a hex wrench. |
| Silent, no hum at all. | Tripped overload or a dead switch or motor. | Press the red reset button, check the breaker, replace if dead. |
| Leak from the bottom. | Cracked housing or failed seal. | Replace the unit. |
| Leak at the top flange. | Worn plumber's putty or loose mounting. | Reseal the flange and tighten the mount. |
| Leak at the drain pipe side. | Loose or worn gasket and slip nut. | Tighten or replace the gasket and fittings. |
| Sink backs up. | Clog beyond the disposal. | Clear the line with a cable or snake. |
Jams and the hex wrench trick
When the disposal hums but the blades will not turn, something is stuck. Turn off the power first. Most units have a small hex socket in the center of the underside. Put the hex wrench in and work it back and forth until the flywheel moves freely.
Pull out what jammed it with tongs or pliers. A fruit pit, bone, bottle cap or a stray spoon is common. Then press the reset button on the bottom of the unit, restore power and run cold water as you test. Do not reach in by hand, and do not use the switch to test while you are working.
If it jams again right away, the motor or the flywheel may be damaged.
No hum, no power, no spin
A silent unit often tripped its overload. Press the red reset button on the bottom and try again. If it trips repeatedly, the motor is struggling and will not last.
Check the breaker, the wall switch and the outlet under the sink next. A loose plug or a failed switch is cheaper to fix than the disposal. If everything has power and the unit stays dead, the motor has burned out and replacement is the answer.
Where a disposal leaks
Leaks come from three places, and where the water appears tells you the repair. A drip at the top ring where the unit mounts to the sink means the flange seal or mounting has failed. A drip from the side where the drain pipe attaches is a loose slip nut or a worn gasket. A drip from the bottom or body, often with rust staining, means the housing has cracked.
The first two are repairs. The third is a replacement. Dry the area and run water with a paper towel under the unit to see exactly where the drip begins. Tell us what you see on the call.
Replacing a disposal
A replacement takes the old unit off its mounting ring, removes the electrical connection and installs a new one with fresh putty and gaskets. We match horsepower and mounting style to your sink and your use. A bigger household that grinds a lot benefits from a stronger motor.
If you plan to add a unit where there was none, that is a plumbing installation job with an electrical connection to consider. For Wayzata, the city says it does not require permits for replacing a garbage disposal if the work does not alter the piping system. For Minnetonka, ask the City of Minnetonka building department whether your project needs a permit.
When the kitchen sink backs up
If water rises in the kitchen sink while the disposal runs, the clog may be past the disposal. Grease, coffee grounds and starchy foods build up in the kitchen drain line and make a thick plug. A cable machine or hydro jetter clears the line, and a drain camera shows the cause.
If the backup spreads to other fixtures, the problem is in the main drain and our drain cleaning service handles it. Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into a standing sink. It sits in the bowl, harms pipes and creates a hazard for the plumber.
Dishwasher drain and air gap
The dishwasher drains through the disposal or a dedicated inlet. A high loop in the dishwasher hose or an air gap keeps dirty water from flowing back. If the dishwasher fills the sink or smells, check that connection and make sure the knockout plug was removed from a new disposal's dishwasher inlet.
What happens on a visit
We keep the sequence the same each time.
Make it safe
Power is cut at the breaker and the supply is shut off. We never put hands in the unit.
Diagnose
We turn the flywheel, test the reset and check the flange, gasket and drain connections.
Repair or replace
You get the options and a clear price before work starts.
Test
We run water, check the dishwasher connection and watch for drips under the sink.
What affects disposal repair and replacement cost
The price follows the problem. You hear a clear price before work starts.
Water damage from a sudden disposal failure may be covered by a homeowner policy, while wear and gradual leaks usually are not. Read your policy and call your insurer.
Keeping a disposal running
Run cold water before, during and after use. Avoid grease, large bones, fibrous scraps such as celery strings, and starchy items in bulk. Feed food in small amounts.

Questions about garbage disposal repair in Minnetonka
Yes. The 24/7 line is answered around the clock, including nights and weekends, and same-day appointments are offered when available.
Something has jammed the flywheel. Turn off the power, work a hex wrench in the underside socket and clear the object. Then press reset.
It is a small red button on the bottom of the unit. Press it after the motor has cooled.
No. Always use tongs or pliers with the power off, and never put a hand in.
A leak at the flange or drain connection can often be resealed. A leak from the body means replacement.
The clog is likely beyond the disposal. A cable or jetter clears the line.
A dishwasher hose needs a high loop or an air gap so dirty water cannot flow back. We check it whenever the sink backs up.
