What the city's treatment plant does before water reaches your tap
Eden Prairie pulls water from 15 wells averaging about 398 feet deep and treats it at its own plant using lime softening. The city says treated tap water averages about 5 grains per gallon, against about 21 in the raw well water, and that residents do not need a home softener. For your plumbing, that means far less scale on heating elements and fixtures than raw hard water would leave.
Softer water does not make a heater last forever. Sediment still settles, anode rods still wear out, and thermostats and elements still fail. A tank that rumbles or runs lukewarm is usually a water heater repair job, such as a bad element, a worn thermostat or a failed thermocouple.
Because the city already softens, a salt unit adds sodium and brine waste on top. Skip a sales pitch unless a water test says otherwise. If you do still want one, a water softener installation needs a city permit. The Eden Prairie permit page says a plumbing permit is required for installing, altering or repairing any plumbing system, including water heaters and water softeners, according to the city's building inspections division.
Eden Prairie water heater symptoms and the part behind them
Most no-hot-water calls come down to a short list of parts.
| Symptom | Likely part | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No hot water, electric tank. | Element, thermostat or tripped limit. | Test, then replace the part. |
| No hot water, gas tank. | Pilot, thermocouple or gas control. | Relight test, replace the part. |
| Rumbling or popping. | Sediment on the tank bottom. | Flush the tank. |
| Water at the base. | Leaking tank or loose fitting. | Shut off supply, assess. |
| Relief valve dripping. | High pressure or temperature. | Check pressure and expansion tank. |
A tank that leaks through its body cannot be repaired. That is when replacement comes up, and the plumber will say so plainly.
Flying Cloud Drive water main relining in 2026
The city is relining about 3,700 feet of aging water main on Flying Cloud Drive between Regional Center Drive and Prairie Center Drive. The area covers Quebec Circle, Vancouver Road, Ontario Boulevard and Manitoba Road, with construction planned for summer to early fall of 2026. Relining works inside the old pipe, so the city handles the main, not your house plumbing.
If you live in that stretch and notice pressure changes or cloudy water, check with the Public Works Utilities Division first. If only one fixture is affected, or you see water at your own meter, the problem is on your side of the line, and the 24/7 line can look at it.
If you received an unknown-material service line notice
The city sent notices in 2024 to households whose service line material is unknown, and it says not all lines have been identified yet. The service line is the pipe from the main to your house. Eden Prairie's 2020 lead and copper sampling found 0 of 30 sites over the action level, so the notice is about finishing the record. A plumber can check the material where the pipe enters your basement.
If the pipe turns out to be old or corroded, water service line repair replaces the run from the main to the meter. Ask the city who owns which section before scheduling.
A town built after 1960, and the drains that came with it
Eden Prairie grew from about 2,000 residents in 1960 to almost 60,000 by 2000. The city says most homes were built after code safeguards against lead took effect. Supply lines are mostly copper or plastic, so trouble tends to come from drains: kitchen lines packed with grease, tub lines choked with hair, and main lines where roots find a joint.
Houses from that boom are now old enough that original heaters and drain pipes need attention. Drain cleaning with a cable or hydro jetter handles most clogs, and a camera tells us whether a repeat blockage is roots or a sagging section.
Eden Prairie permits reach water heaters and softeners
The City of Eden Prairie Building Inspections Division requires a plumbing permit to install, alter, repair or extend any plumbing system. That includes fixtures, water heaters, water softeners and lawn-irrigation backflow preventers. Owners who live in the home may do their own work except natural gas work, but permits still apply.
The city page does not state who must hold a license. Minnesota requires a plumbing contractor license in communities over 5,000 residents, so verify any hired plumber at the Minnesota DLI Check a License lookup before work starts.
Eden Prairie utilities at a glance
These facts decide whose pipe a problem belongs to.
Who runs what
The Public Works Utilities Division handles water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer. Sewage treatment goes through the Metropolitan Council. A blockage at the street is theirs, and one inside your walls is yours.
Three ZIPs, two services
We take water heater repair requests across 55347, 55346 and 55344, and drain cleaning requests in the same three. Eden Prairie also uses 55343, which Hopkins covers.
Getting there
Dispatch reaches town by Interstate 494 and the Flying Cloud Drive corridor. Give a cross street, since the city has no named neighborhoods to key on.
Before we arrive in Eden Prairie
Water heater and drain emergencies call for different first moves.
Find the main shutoff
Most homes here put the main valve and meter where the line enters, in a basement or utility room. Turn the valve clockwise until it stops.
Kill power to wet areas
At an electric heater, switch off its breaker before anyone reaches in. At a gas heater, turn the gas control to off and leave the area if you smell gas.
Clear the area
Clear a path to the heater and the floor drain. Write down the model label on the tank, since it speeds up parts.
Call the 24/7 line
Tell dispatch whether it is hot water, a drain or a leak, and whether the house got a service line notice. The answer shapes the visit.
Questions from Eden Prairie homeowners
Yes. Eden Prairie uses 55347, the largest and primary ZIP, plus 55346 and 55344. Together they take in the Flying Cloud Drive corridor, the area around Eden Prairie Center, and the neighborhoods by Round Lake, Staring Lake and Purgatory Creek Park. Some 55343 addresses use the Eden Prairie name too, and our Hopkins coverage handles those.
Yes. The 24/7 line dispatches licensed plumbers to Eden Prairie nights, weekends and holidays. A burst heater or a main-line backup counts as an emergency, and we start there.
The city says no. It softens water at its own plant to about 5 grains per gallon and tells residents a home softener is not needed. Test your tap and ask the city if you notice scale anyway.
The city allows owners who live in the home to do their own plumbing work, but not natural gas work, and permits still apply. Water heaters are on the permit list, so ask the Building Inspections Division first.
It might for homes near that stretch. Check with the city utilities division for notices. If the trouble is at one tap only, it is probably inside your house.
The notice means the city has not identified the pipe material yet. Lead and copper sampling in 2020 found no sites over the action level. A plumber can check the pipe where it enters your house.
